Comparison of advantages and disadvantages of powder metallurgy and foundry casting

2024-01-11

Powder metallurgy is similar to the scope of foundry, foundry is strictly modeling casting, usually including sand casting and shell film casting. Generally speaking, the tensile properties of foundry castings and traditional powder metallurgy parts are the same as metal injection molded parts. The mechanical properties of powder metallurgy parts, especially the impact energy, are higher than those of foundry castings. The choice of which process often depends on the size of the part, and large parts should be manufactured by foundry casting.

To the extent that both powder metallurgy processes and foundry casting are feasible, foundry casting typically has lower tooling and material costs, but higher production costs. The manufacturing tolerances of powder metallurgy parts are small, and no or only a very small amount of subsequent cutting is required, while castings require a large amount of cutting. In the parts of large output, the use of powder metallurgy process is more appropriate. For small, complex-shaped parts with high dimensional accuracy, metal injection molding may be more economical than foundry casting.
