The dream of a powerful country cannot be separated from the independent development of materials

"If you want to become a powerful country, it is impossible to become a powerful country without going through materials!" At the "Science Forum" recently hosted by the China Science and Technology Museum, Shi Changxu, the winner of the country's highest science and technology award and a senior academician of the two academies, issued a cry of "the dream of a strong country, materials are indispensable.

Shi Changxu said that with automobile materials as the dividing point, materials can be divided into traditional materials and advanced materials. The former, such as steel, cement, plastics, etc., win by quantity in the market, while the latter win by technology, with high added value, which is the foundation of high-end manufacturing in the future. The relationship between advanced materials and aerospace is particularly close. The characteristics of lightweight and strength of materials determine the performance of aircraft. However, China's aerospace shuttle materials still rely heavily on imports, and these "stuck neck" problems need to be solved urgently.

However, China's current emphasis on materials "has not been implemented". Shi Changxu said that at present, my country's self-sufficiency rate of new materials is only more than ten percent, and it still needs to rely heavily on imports. "The development of high-end manufacturing materials must go ahead. Up to now, our material development has not been comparable to the international level."

He also said that the development of materials can not be solved by just sending a few papers. At present, the number of papers published in materials science in China has surpassed that of the United States, ranking first in the world, but the relevant research results only stay in the articles and do not enter the application field.

The "father of China's high-temperature alloys" called for an imminent change in this situation. He said, "China's materials should be 'less import' and more independent creation."
